Waititi has enjoyed success producing crowd pleasing fare in the superhero genre in recent years. His turn on Thor: Ragnarok was widely praised, and though Thor: Love and Thunder was considered to be a misstep for him, he’s linked to an untitled Star Wars movie that he has free creative control over. The plot of that film is unknown, and casting does not seem to have begun yet.

Keoghan, who has himself found success in the superhero genre (alongside his other projects), recently revealed that he’s been trying to get in touch with Waititi to join the project. In an interview with GQ, Keoghan is quoted as saying, “I’m tryna meet [Taika]… I’ve been askin’ everyone.” It is unknown if Keoghan has gotten through to Waititi since the October 2022 interview was published.

Keoghan performed as Druig in Marvel Studios’ Eternals. Though the film did not do well with audiences or with critics, Keoghan’s performance was one that was praised despite the other elements of the film being portrayed as lackluster. Keoghan also appeared briefly, and memorably, in The Batman, where he was cast as the Joker in The Batman. His acting chops are beyond doubt, as outside of the superhero genre, he’s starred in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and received awards for his supporting role in The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Keoghan would be an excellent addition to the Star Wars galaxy. Though Waititi’s plot is unknown, Keoghan has proven himself to be a versatile actor who can handle different types of projects. Waititi has expressed interest in exploring a new corner of the Star Wars galaxy, but with the Force being omnipresent in the setting and Waititi revealing the goal of his Star Wars movie is to include certain elements of the franchise, perhaps Keoghan could portray a Dark Sided character.

Whatever the plot may be, a Waititi-Keoghan collaboration would be fun to watch. Waititi famously has a great rapport with his actors, and his profile has quickly risen in recent years as an affable and friendly director. Recently, he has gained more than a few detractors following the poor performance of Thor Love and Thunder, but maybe this Star Wars movie can win back the crowd. With Keoghan in a starring role, the acting is guaranteed to be great.

The Star Wars saga is available on Disney Plus.
