During a History of the Batman panel at Los Angeles Comic-Con, Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and John Glover (The Riddler) have revealed that Batman: The Animated series will absolutely continue with the original cast returning. Rumors of the series’ return were being thrown around before, but many assumed that it would be back as an animated show.

During the panel, the two iconic voice actors gave a little tease of what to expect. “It’s a great script by Alan Burnett, and it brings back the original cast,” said Conroy, who is one of the definitive voices of Batman. Glover then went on to add that, “The Riddler’s back, and he’s evolved in many ways … He understands he’s on the spectrum." Furthermore, Conroy announced that Danny Elfman, who composed the score for Tim Burton’s Batman films and the theme for the animated series, will write the theme for the new audio drama. A platform for the audio drama was not announced at the event.
Batman: The Animated Series was revered not only for its accurate depiction of the Caped Crusader but also for introducing new villains or revamping the origins of classic foes. Mr. Freeze, for example, was given a more sympathetic background that added a human touch to his motivations. This show is also responsible for introducing Harley Quinn to audiences, and it’s clear how much fans have taken to the character ever since.
Fans who miss Batman: The Animated Series will hopefully be thrilled by the audio drama. Of course, doing an audio drama is very challenging because it requires fans to fill in the blanks as to what they’re supposed to see, which may be what DC is going for. Audio dramas were the original format for a lot of these superhero shows, where kids sat by the radio in order to hear the stories that were being narrated.
What DC will have to do is deliver on the sound effects, punching noises, Batarang clanks, gunshots, and much more if they hope to have fans enjoy the audio drama. If it does well, this may become a new entertainment format for fans to listen to on their commute.
