The news comes directly from the Twitter of the senior video & media director/editor at EA DICE, Randy Evans, who is working on the upcoming Battlefield trailer. His post was short and sweet, stating simply, “Battlefield 2018 reveal trailer is underway.” Evans did not specify an expected date for the trailer, but there isn’t a need to rush it out the door just yet. The game was confirmed by EA to release this October, so there’s plenty of time to hype the title.
The last game in the series, Battlefield 1, released in the Fall of 2016, so it’s no surprise EA is gearing up for the next installment. Although the title was incredibly popular, reaching a player count of over 21 million, two years is a long lifespan for a Battlefield game, and players are likely ready to move on.
As for what the next game will be like is anyone’s guess. Battlefield 1 surprised audiences when its theme was revealed to be World War I (which explained the odd numbering of the title). Perhaps EA will move on to the second World War, returning the series to its roots, or possibly fast forward back to more modern times. It is this uncertainty that makes the anticipation for the upcoming trailer a touch more exciting.
While details are nil, the next Battlefield might include features inspired by PUBG. Last month, EA CEO Andrew Wilson had some interesting things to say about PlayerUnknown’s Battleground. Specifically, that the Battlefield team has been eyeing the battle royale shooter, examining its core gameplay and map design. Whether that means the team is looking to include a full-on battle royale mode or are simply checking out the competition is unclear. Audiences will just have to wait and see what EA is cooking up when the reveal trailer finally drops.
Battlefield 2018 is in development for unspecified consoles for release in October 2018.
